Sustainability at Goddard
Help Cut the Carbon
We are continuing our efforts to do our part to address the vital issue of climate change. We need your help and insights. We invite all community members to help reduce our carbon footprint and to undertake individual and collective actions to promote sustainable practices, during the residency and the year.
Please reduce energy consumption: shut doors and windows; turn off un-needed lights; have brief showers. Interested in knowing more? Visit the Sustainable Goddard site on First Class (Click on Campus at Large).
Bikes for Transportation and Campus Sustainability
For students and faculty who would like to ride a bike around campus or into town, there are now five bicycles available with helmets on campus. You can sign out a bike at the Help Desk in the Community Center at no cost. (You do need to sign a waiver of claims form.) This is part of the work of the sustainability team, with special thanks to BA in Individualized Studies Program Director Bob Buchanan.
Sustainable Living: Ride Shares
As part of our efforts to reduce carbon emissions, we invite everyone to visit the ride share board on First Class under Student Services to find out about how to share rides to campus with other students.
Student-run Volunteer Project: Goddard Greenhouse and Garden
Last year we turned another portion of our meticulously manicured lawn into a garden and reopened the greenhouse. This season, thanks to the initiative and hard work of IBA1 student Patricia Coughlin, the greenhouse and garden is a student-run volunteer effort.
The garden is growing with organic vegetables that are used during the residencies. Stop by and check out the bounty: lettuce, basil, beets, pumpkins, cilantro, basil, cucumbers, fenugreek, purslane, dill, and chamomile. Patricia and Dave Palmer (her gardening sidekick from Goddard Facilities Staff) invite you to spend time in the garden and help while you are on campus. “There is always watering or weeding to be done.”

See you in the garden.
Meatless Monday
Each Monday of each residency this summer will be a meatless meal offering. Meatless Monday is an international campaign that encourages people to cut out meat on Mondays to improve their health and the health of the planet. Reducing meat consumption by 15% (the equivalent of one day a week) lessens the risk of chronic preventable illness and has a strong positive impact on the environment. MeatlessMonday.com offers weekly meat-free recipes, articles, tips and news. Please contact Goddard faculty Catherine Lowther, catherine.lowther@goddard.edu, for more information or with comments and responses to Meatless Monday.
